From Relief to Restoration: Supporting Mama Esther’s Family

A community outreach becomes an ongoing effort to create a safer and more dignified home.

During one of MedCare NG’s community outreaches in Kaduna state, one of our Volunteers Santong Douglas visited the family of Mama Esther to provide essential food items. The visit was intended to offer immediate support to a family experiencing significant hardship. However, as Santong spent time with the family, it became evident that their challenges extended beyond access to food.

The condition of the family’s home was particularly concerning. The house had no proper windows or doors, unfinished floors and walls, and a roof that required attention. In an area where insecurity is also a concern, the absence of secure doors and windows left the family especially vulnerable. What began as an effort to provide food therefore revealed a much broader need, one involving safety, shelter, and dignity.

The situation came to the attention of Dr. Jwanna Savoie-Powell who is Medcare Ngs Director and Sponsor. Concerned by what she saw, she asked Santong to return to the family and assess what would be required to improve the condition of the house. Her intervention marked the beginning of a new phase of support, transforming a one-time outreach into a longer-term restoration effort.

Following the assessment, work commenced with the installation of doors and windows. Four windows and two doors have now been completed and installed, providing the family with improved security, privacy, and protection. While these may appear to be modest improvements, they represent a significant change for a family that previously lived without these basic features.

The work, however, is not yet complete. The floors and walls still require further attention, alongside other repairs necessary to make the house safer and more habitable. MedCare NG is therefore continuing to seek the support of individuals, philanthropists, organisations, and corporate partners who can contribute towards the remaining work through financial support, building materials, skilled labour, or other resources.

We are documenting this journey because we believe that community impact should be visible and accountable. Our supporters should be able to see not only where an intervention begins, but also how their support contributes to tangible change.

Mama Esther’s story is a reminder that community support is often about looking beyond the immediate need. A food donation provided immediate relief; addressing the condition of the home offers the possibility of longer-term security and dignity. One intervention opened the door to another, and the journey from relief to restoration continues.

MedCare NG remains committed to supporting vulnerable families and working with compassionate partners to create meaningful, sustainable change in the communities we serve.
